In election years, politicians look out for voters. That’s what skeptics say Gov. Henry McMaster did last week by urging lawmakers to change state tax laws. This will give taxpayers a break in line with federal tax reforms, he said. But some lawmakers say they fear federal reforms could have taxpayers paying more in state income taxes. They say they should not simply amend state tax law without cutting state taxes. State taxpayers may pay $1.6 billion less in federal income taxes but $180 million more in state taxes. Days before this year’s session ends, a tax bill is still in a House committee. McMaster said he will sign the bill if it includes tax cuts for all taxpayers.
