District 5 offers internships, work-based learning

Students in the District Five community are provided with work-based learning and internship possibilities.

Seniors in high school are eligible to participate in opportunities that can prepare them for their future. They must have a part-time job that does not necessarily have to pay but students have to spend at least forty hours working in their field of interest.

The CATE Center provides students with a lot of advantages and opportunities. This program will allow students to know if their current choice of career is the right career path for them. It shows them a glimpse of their future before throwing themselves into it.

"If it wasn't for the CATE Center here, I don't know where I would be or what I would be doing at this time, or even pass highschool. To be honest, it's definitely an advantage." Said Makayla Sumter, a senior at the Center and Dutch Fork High.

The Director of Career and Technical Education, Dr. Al Gates said, "the really good thing about this is it shows the business world and the people in the community that School District Five is doing an excellent job preparing students to be career-ready."

A shop manager, David Humphries also weighed in on the conversation. "The value from this program, allows them to come in for small chunks of time, get that experience, figure out what they're going to be doing and allows them to put it all together once they graduate and come in full time."
