Water safe despite funny taste, smell

Your tap water taste or smell strange?
You’re not alone.
Residents of West Columbia, Lexington and other areas served by the Lake Murray Water Treatment Plant have complained that their water tastes like dirt.
Laurin Barnes of the Town of Lexington reported inquiries about the smell and taste of tap water.
“We want to assure you the water is safe to drink as it is monitored and tested on a daily basis,” she said.
“Plant operators are exploring additional measures to improve the taste and odor. This is solely a smell and taste issue and not a health concern.”
Barnes said West Columbia, which operates the Lake Murray plant, tests the water daily, and an independent lab tests weekly for the Town of Lexington.
High temperatures are warming lake water for a longer time causing lake algae to bloom rapidly.
The plant has increased carbon filtration to its maximum level, Barnes said, but it is still not able to overcome the increase in algae.
When the smell and taste will return to normal is not yet known. As the weather cools, it will naturally help.
