SC senators voted unanimously Tuesday to make teachers eligible for vaccine.
Their resolution – proposed by Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey, who represents Lexington County – will:
• Make critical school staff and daycare workers eligible.
• Require school districts to offer in-person classes 5 days a week immediately after spring break, even if teachers aren’t fully vaccinated.
“We either vaccinate teachers now or we don’t need to vaccinate them till June,” Sen. Massey said.
House members have introduced their own resolution to move teachers up to Phase 1a and reopen school 5 days a week in 28 days.
Teacher groups say they must be vaccinated because many are out on medical leave or quarantined making it hard for schools to stay open.
Lexington County's 5 school districts are using in-person and online classes.
A Department of Education spokesperson said roughly 57% of school employees – 70,000 people – would get the vaccine if provided immediately.
SC has received 970,250 doses and given only 548,214, DHEC data shows.
Thousands of seniors are on wait lists while SC is still in Phase 1a for health care workers and those age 65 and older.
About 1.3 million people are eligible in 1a.
Placing teachers ahead of the line could lead to cancelling thousands of senior appointments.
