Many of us in Lexington County may have a hidden nest egg we’re unaware of.
State Treasurer Curtis Loftis encourages you to visit his web site Treasurer.sc.gov to find out if you have any money in unclaimed property.
“We have $700 million,” Loftis said. “I’d love to write every penny out tomorrow.”
The fund contains money from old water bills, apartment deposits and gifts from family as examples.
The largest check ever turned by the treasurer’s office in unclaimed funds has been $950,000.
The average check is $120 to $130, Loftis said.
“I was in Laurens yesterday with Stuart Jones, the House representative up there and we found a fellow, 85-years-old, sitting on his front porch, lives alone, $122,000,” Loftis said.
South Carolinians who have moved out of state still have a chance to recover money. Missingmoney.com is a website that Loftis and 47 other state treasurers set up to ensure people around the country can find any unknown cash in their name.
