Remembering Coach White

Posted

We lost a great man in Harold White.
He died Feb. 15, 2019 at age 78.
“Coach” was my friend since 1966.
He was coach at Lakeside School in West Columbia when I worked at T & T Sporting Goods. He treated everyone equally - with respect.
More than anything else, he cared about people. I remember his stories about helping well-known athletes get an education at USC.
He was also a great motivational speaker.
In the early 1990s, I was helping a group in the Waverly Neighborhood of Columbia with a summer youth program. Our objective was to keep kids in school, off of drugs and help them plan for a career.
“Coach” was one of my role model speakers. And what a speaker he was.
When he talked about growing up poor in the “projects” and seeing his brother killed, every ear was tuned to him. I like to believe that many of those kids were inspired by him. That is the Harold White I remember, always helping someone.
