Jeanette Samuels, who currently teaches at Cayce Elementary School, plans to retire at the end of the school year. The 4K teacher has been an educator for 38 years.

Samuels’ first teaching job, right out of college, was at a Catholic school. She has also taught in Richland One schools, specifically at A.C. Moore Elementary. It was not until 2000 that Samuels moved to Lexington School District Two.

Samuels said the teaching profession has evolved over the years. The biggest change she has seen has been in the growth of technology in education. She also said she has kept her passion to teach children throughout the years.

West Columbia Beautification Foundation is getting some Midlands Gives funds. The Foundation participated in Midlands Gives on May 1.

Corporal David Myers of the West Columbia Police Department putted for Mayor Bobby Horton at the Mayor’s Putting Challenge to raise money for the Foundation during Midlands Gives. The headquarters for the Midlands Gives all-day giving event was at the S.C. State Museum in Columbia.

The West Columbia Beautification Foundation is committed to redefining West Columbia as an impressive and attractive place to live, work, or visit by involving the entire community in positive beautification efforts.  It partners with the City of West Columbia to beautify both public and private areas through landscaping and other projects. The Beautification Foundation provides a mechanism to accept tax deductible contributions for this purpose.

In 2008, community leaders, elected officials, and city staff collaborated to establish the West Columbia Beautification Foundation, a nonprofit organization designed to energize West Columbia as an attractive community for residents and visitors.
