Haggards honored at Newberry College

Approximately 200 friends and relatives met at Newberry College recently to honor Charlie and Jean Haggard with a reception and dinner. The Haggards received the John Bachman Founders Society award for their contributions to Newberry College.

The Pelion High School Bands placed nine students in the SCBDA Region and All State Bands. The Pelion “4:00” Jazz Band received a Superior Rating for the third straight year at the SCBDA State Jazz Festival and Performance Assessment. The Pelion Aureate Winter Guard placed 7th at the CWEA Southeastern Championships. The Pelion Wind Ensemble received a Superior Rating for the third straight year at the SCBDA State Concert and Festival and Performance Assessment. The Pelion Band Students received five Superior Ratings at Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Colin Williams, a student at Forts Pond Elementary, won first place in the Pelion Poetry contest that the Pelion Library hosted. He entered an original piece in the elementary division. Forts Pond Elementary first through fifth grade students have solved 4,645,656 math problems, making them number two in South Carolina and 26th in the United States.

Meredith Miller received the Marjorie Stands

Music Educator of the Year Award from the Symphony League. The award was presented by the Symphony League president during the awards ceremony.

Pelion Branch Library will host Murder Mystery Night May 11 at 6 p.m. The stage is set on a warm, dark night for a creepy murder mystery. Registration is required; call 785-3272. This event is for ages 15 and up. May 12 is yarn art at 10 a.m. for ages 13 and up. Spine Crackers Book Club meets May 16 at 3 p.m. and will be reading “The One Man” by Andrew Gross.

Happy Birthday to Carlton Herndon and Joe Craft.

Pelion Senior Center will play “Have Win, Will Travel” May 11. The seniors will travel to Beulah Methodist Church May 17.
