May you live in interesting times

An editor's note about better news in bad times

Posted

Good Friday morning,
These times remind me of the Chinese curse:
No. I’m not talking about the Chinese virus.
“May you live in interesting times” is the curse.
And these are interesting times, aren’t they?

One of my favorite writers sent me a note recently.
Bestselling novelist James Scott Bell wrote:
“I think of Frodo and Gandalf in Lord of the Rings.”
Frodo, who is young and inexperienced, says:
“I wish it need not have happened in my time.”

Gandalf, older and wiser, says, “So do I.
“And so do all who live to see such times.
“But that is not for them to decide.
"All we have to decide is what to do
with the time that is given us.”

Consider that. We still have some say in the matter.’
We may not be able to control the virus but we
certainly can control ourselves and our behavior.

We can still live as we were meant to live.
We can live rich lives of service and purpose.
We just don’t have to take foolish risks.
What purpose do you pursue and serve today>

Please write and let me know.
