Vandals damage Gilbert Senior Center

Posted

Maxine Caughman, Director of the Gilbert-Summit Senior Center, informed us the center was recently vandalized. This crime was committed late at night or early in the morning.

At the front of the GSSC there are several memorial rocks inscribed with the names of the members who have passed. The vandal(s) used two of these rocks and broke out a window on the side door to gain entry. Walls were damaged and a fire extinguisher was used to spray the kitchen and other areas with the chemicals. The crime was not discovered until the opening of the GSSC that morning.

The center had to be closed nearly two weeks to repair and clean the building. Caughman said the seniors who come to the center could not get their daily lunches nor enjoy fellowship with each other.

Meals on Wheels recipients did get their meals delivered to them. Caughman said the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has not made an arrest.  She asked anyone with information about the crime to call the LCSD at 785-8230.

The senior center has reopened and the members are having their daily lunches, fellowship, and planned activities.

Caughman said activities for May include the Irmo-Chapin Health Fair, shopping, day trip to the Little Mountain Antiques Mall, attending the Senior Citizen’s Day at the Spirit Communication Park, health checks, games, entertainment by the Gilbert Kids Chorus. GSSC members who have birthdays this month include Brenda Bogart, Dean Balder, Letha Long, and Corine Dennis.

Congratulations to GSSC member Connie Jordan, who was selected the Meals on wheels Volunteer of the Year, and to Robert Goering, who was selected as the MOW Volunteer of the Year for the District.
