GEORGE BRYAN COLUMN - Q&A WITH MOLLY HARDWICK

Posted

The holiday season is a time for families to spend time together.

The Irmo-Chapin Winter Tour’s operational mantra for 27 years has been for families to spend  time together with golf being the recreational theme. The developmental golf program is unique in that the learning is designed to take place on the golf course with parents serving as caddies, fourcaddies, course guides, mentors, coaches or fans.
Brand new to college prep youth players ages 7 to 18 are eligible. There is still time to register for opening day in January and December is the training season. To phone register,  call (803) 781-2063.
Now, its time to turn the spotlight on Molly Hardwick who has had a sensational year of golf and recently won the SCJGA Players Championship. She is beyond her years in maturity and think you will enjoy the interview:

GB - “How and When did you get started in golf?”
MH - “My dad plays golf and he was always encouraging me to try it. I was playing other sports, but when I was 8, I did a golf camp at a local club and loved it. I participated in a drive, chip and putt qualifier just for fun that same year and ended up making it to the finals at Augusta National. That got me hooked.”
GB - “What year are you at Lexington High School?”
MH - “I’m a sophomore.
GB - “What’s your favorite part of the game or what do you like best about golf?”
MH - Even when you play really well, there’s always something to keep working on, keep improving. That’s what keeps me coming back every day. Another amazing thing about golf is the relationships I’ve been able to build with other girls and their families over the years.”
GB - “Have any short or long range golf goals?”
MH - “I always have both. I’ll have a couple of long-range goals that are more results-oriented, and I’ll break those down into short-range goals that are practice-oriented. A few of my long-range goals are qualifying for the USGA Junior Girls, becoming the #1 ranked player in the state and playing collegiate golf. To achieve those goals, right I’m working especially on my mental game, shots inside 100 yards, and putts inside 12 feet, but I evaluate after every tournament to see what I did well and what I need to improve on.”
GB - “You have had a great year and recently won the SCJGA Players Championship. So what are your thoughts and comments about your year and this most recent accomplishment.”
MH - “Thank you. Yes, it was a great year. I accomplished the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the year, and to top it off with a win at the Players was incredible. It’s really gratifying to see my practice and hard work pay off. At the Players, I was chipping and putting well, minimizing my mistakes, and just having a lot of fun. I’m going to put a lot of practice in over the winter to continue improving my game to be prepared for another great year in 2020.”
