The Gilbert High School girls golf team had their best year ever finishing 3rd in the S.C. High School League Class 3A championship.

“We had a really good season finishing 2nd 3 times and 3rd twice,” head coach Dru Nix said. “We are hardware hunting.

“The Lady Indians are only in their 4th year and are consistent contenders and we are knocking on the door a being a great team. Our average was 11 strokes better per 18 round this year than ever before.”

Nix explained the most improved player was 9th grader Meredeth Price. She improved her stroke average by 7 strokes in her 3rd season in competition.

Sophomore Ally Moss also improved 4 strokes a round. And then, there’s Kennedy Gooding who Nix said carried Gilbert this year and her average for 15 hole rounds was 73.

“Kennedy is an elite player and among our state’s best,” Nix said. “She is getting a lot of Division 1 looks and will have many college options. She just received an invite to represent SC in the American Golf Championships in Palm Coast Florida. She will represent South Carolina in the 15-year-old division.

Nix added Alexis Hodge is a “very steady sophomore” and said junior Anna Moss and 9th grader Edie Raine Hardee split time playing in the 5th position.

“This team works hard and truly a pleasure to be around,” Nix said.

In other local golf, the inaugural Timberlake Pro Lady attracted amateurs and pros from around the state.

Dale O’Keefe, Pat Innis, and Diane Ludwig teamed with Professional Justin Neely to win the event while Neely won the individual medal. The team net score was 59, while Neely shot 70.

Susan Christian, Doris Fisher, Mary Jones and professional Mike Hamilton placed 2nd shooting 61.

Tying for 3rd was the team of Pat Rhodes, Sue Arpin, Cathy Ceruti, Timberlake Head Professional Mike Author, Savanah Lakes professional Gaerth Edwards, amateurs Denise Wise, Denise Uitto and Vickie Cyr.

In closing, starting next week there will be a series on the advantages and value of winter golf. The greatest golf stories are born in cultivated in the most unassuming season.

In addition to skill competence and performance based ideas, GolFitness principles will be revealed. Brand new Golf Programs will also be announced, so be sure to stay tuned.
