TENNIS COLUMN BY THOMAS PRICE - The Citadel's Hobson turns pro after TopSpin Training

Posted

This summer TopSpin Tennis said goodbye to Roy Hobson as he embarks on his professional tennis career.
Hobson first came to TopSpin Tennis as student at The Citadel when he and 3 teammates on the men’s tennis team played a scrimmage against the University of Sumter at TopSpin back when Mark Hancock was the director.
Hobson has played tennis all his life and has spent so many hours playing tennis.
He came to TopSpin as tennis instructor because of his strong connections to new tennis director Randy Bloemendaal and assistant tennis director Whit Moorman, whom he used to train with back in Florida.
Former assistant coach at The Citadel Dave Fosnacht is also a TopSpin tennis instructor .
One of the best things about the Lexington tennis scene, according to Hobson, is the people are friendly and the kids are willing to learn about tennis. Hobson has worked with Bloemendaal in the past and what makes him a great instructor is that he is a tough coach and knows what is good for the player and how to help them improve.
After being coached by Bloemendaal last summer, Hobson noticed his improvement.
A primary reason why Hobson became a tennis instructor at TopSpin is because of family around the Lexington area. Hobson lived in South Carolina from ages 13-18 and spent 5 years of his childhood in Florida.
His family supports his decision to go professional considering that his father, Morne Hobson. One of his biggest inspiration when it comes to tennis are his dad and grandfather who were both tennis players.
His his mom is supportive just as long as he pays for himself.
Hobson’s first tournament will be in Vietnam at the end of September. It’s a place he’s never visited, but is looking forward to career his career there. Hobson is prepared and knows that there will be challenges. However, he’s confident that he can handle it.
Now his first tournament is on the Futures circuit, which is the lowest rung of professional tennis.
The Futures circuit are far professional tennis players trying to advance to Association of Tennis Professional Challenger Tours, which is the second highest level of professional tennis.
The Futures circuit of professional tennis is very tough because the tennis players are actually losing money as the prize money they make is often not enough to cover the costs.
This makes Hobson somewhat nervous about trying to support himelf.  Hobson plans to compete in 5 Futures tennis tournaments in Southeast Asia, but there is no guarantee he will get into these tournaments.
He does hope to compete in some futures tennis tournaments in South Africa only if he has the money and can qualify for the tennis tournaments. Hobson sees himself in 5 year playing on the ATP tour.
