18-0! Lexington boys win region opener to stay perfect
The start of Region 5-5A Tuesday night play saw the Lexington boys’ basketball team continue its best start ever.
The inhospitable surroundings of the Wolves Den and facing one of three former Wildcat players brought its share of challenges for the visitors. Just like the previous 17 games, Lexington took control late and pulled away for the 58-49 win.
Mason Carver scored a game-high 24 points and Jonathan Corley had 14 of his 17 points in the first half for Lexington (18-0). The Wildcats led 39-18 at halftime before the Timberwolves rallied to within 6 points in the fourth quarter.
Tauris Watson had 14 points, Jalen Jennings finished with 10 and Braxton Evans contributed 7 4th quarter points for White Knoll.
Carver helped answer the 14-1 run with 10 points in the final stanza. While the boxscore showed just 7 points from point guard Ryan Green, his timely defense and 8 assists kept Lexington in the driver’s seat.
“He has such a big heart,” Harris said. “He plays so hard, he’s all over the floor. I think people try to take advantage of him on switches and different things because of his size and he just makes so many plays on both sides of the floor.”
Lexington stays on the road Thursday to face Pelion. Harris was in the very same gym back in December to watch the Panthers defeat White Knoll.
Although Pelion has dropped 3 straight, this is a non-region matchup Harris promises he’s not “sleeping on them”.
“I watched Pelion beat White Knoll right here and they were way more athletic and talented than I would have ever imagined,” Harris said. “I saw where they put up 82 the other night (in a 90-82 loss to Wagener-Salley this past Saturday) and had 32 in the quarter. When you have a team that can score that huge, you’ve better be ready to play.”
