A total of 16 days had passed since the Gray Collegiate boys' basketball team went inactive for covid-19 protocol.
Back in action Tuesday at Willie L. Scott Sr Gymnasium, the 3-time defending Class 2A champions took care of business as usual. The War Eagles rolled to a 84-35 win over Newberry to claim its 5th straight region title and top seed out of Region 3-2A.
"Guys couldn't wait to get back on the court and play," Gray Collegiate head coach Dion Bethea said. "We were real excited tonight, us capturing our 5th straight region championship. So, we're excited. We're ready for the playoffs."
Gray Collegiate (16-4, 7-0) led from the opening tip, jumping out to a 14-1 lead in the 1st quarter. At 1 point, the War Eagles had more slam dunks (finishing with 7 in the game) than the Bulldogs had points.
Leading the slam dunk fest were the trio of Chase McDuffie, Tim Barnes and Barndon Gardner. McDuffie and Barnes each finished with 12 points and Gardner added 11 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks.
The defense not only created numerous transition points, but also held Newberry without a field goal through the final 7 minutes of the game. Zack Chalmers led Newberry with 12 points and Kiyjuan Crooks provided a brief spark with back-to-back 3-pointers in the 2nd quarter after Gray College built a 30-point lead.
The 2nd half saw the War Eagles heat up from behind the arc. They connected on 7 of its 8 3-pointers in the 2nd half to increase its lead as many as 50 late in the game.
Gray Collegiate enters the post-season on an 8-game winning streak. The quest for a 4th straight title Monday on campus against Greer Middle College.
"We've seen a little bit of everything this year, but there's only 1 team beating us and that's us beating ourselves. So we've got to continue to keep playing good basketball."
The Gray Collegiate girls basketball team also clinched a playoff berth Tuesday. The Lady War Eagles (9-5) defeated Crescent 46-43 in overtime to claim the at-large seed in the Class 2A Upper State bracket.
They will travel Saturday to Christ Church for the opening round.
