In what amounted to The K.Z. Adams Show Friday night at Midlands Sports Complex, Gray Collegiate Academy advanced in the Class 2A playoffs with a 44-18 win over St. Joseph’s.
The sophomore running back scored every 1 of the War Eagles’ 5 touchdowns either as a running back or a pass receiver. He rushed for 205 yards and 3 touchdowns and added 50 receiving yards and 2 TDs.
On a cold and rainy night, the game’s first half was evenly split with each team moving the ball well on offense. It was mostly on the ground given the wet conditions.
Point after attempts were problematic for both sides, with kicks and 2 -point conversions missed. It wasn't until Gray Collegiate took the lead with 39 seconds remaining in the second quarter on a touchdown screen pass by Hunter Helms to Adams, who added the 2-point conversion run to put his team up 20-18 at halftime.
The War Eagles' defense shut down the Knights in the second half and its offense continued to roll. Helms added another touchdown pass to Adams in the 3rd quarter.
Gray Collegiate capped off its scoring in the 4th quarter with a defensive touchdown off a blocked punt.
Up next is a 3rd round home matchup against defending 4-time Class 4A champion Abbeville at a site to be determined.
