Neither Airport High School varsity basketball team could get much going against their Region 4-4A opponents North Augusta Friday.
Both teams fell short by double digit scoring margins at home.
The girls varsity squad had the tallest order of the evening facing the two-time defending Class 4A state champions. Add the absence of a starting point guard and it was an uphill battle from the start.
North Augusta created momentum and extra scoring with turnovers and a stout defense to lead at the half 27-16. A brief run by the Lady Eagles in the third period saw them close to 33-24, but the Lady Yellow Jackets’ defense shut them down for the rest of the game to win 52-24.
Caleigh Corbitt was the Airport high scorer with 10 points.
The boys’ varsity game stayed close throughout the first half. North Augusta led 29-23 at the half before opening a 20-point lead in the third quarter.
Strong offensive rebounding, second chance baskets and some outside shooting enabled the Yellow Jackets to pull away 64-66. Brandon Caughman and R.J. Howell each scored 8 points for Airport.
