AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL - Lexington Post 7 falls in extra innings

Chapin/Newberry evens series with Greer Post 115

Lexington Post 7 came within 2 outs Tuesday at Lexington High of evening its Best-of-5 American Legion playoff series.
Down 6-4, top seed Florence Post 1 refused to go down quietly in its last at-bat. Austin Moore's 2-run homer in the Top 7th tied the game and forced extra innings.
Two innings later, Florence grabbed the lead on an RBI sacrifice fly by Owen Taylor. Reliever Timmy Felder pitched a scoreless bottom 9th and Lexington Post 7 found itself down 0-2 following the 7-6 loss.
Florence (29-3) won its 9th straight game and can advance to the Lower State final with a win Wednesday at Legion Field. It would then face the winner of the series between Orangeburg Post 4 and Camden Post 4.
Camden gained a 2-0 advantage following a 15-5 road win Tuesday at Mirmow Field. It will look to clinch at home Wednesday.
Lexington (10-15) held a 2-1 lead through 4 innings as it used a pair of double plays to stop potential Florence rallies. In the top 5th, Will Hardee tied the game with an RBI double off starter Will Lott and Owen Taylor hit a liner that deflected off Noah Huthmaker's glove at 3rd base and brought home 2 runs to put Florence on top 4-3.
Huthmaker made amends in the Bottom 5th with a leadoff solo home run over the leftfield wall off reliever Robbie Jordan. In the top 6th, Lexington had runners on 2nd and 3rd when Brett McEwen of Batesburg-Leesville cleared the bases with a 2-out double off Felder.
Huthmaker followed with an RBI single which looked like ample insurance at the time for Lexington. After striking out leadoff hitter Noah Carter, Chase Rikard gave up a single to Taylor which set up Moore for his game-tying heroics.
The score remained tied until the top 9th. Will Hardee drew a leadoff walk, advanced to 2nd base on a passed ball, moved to 3rd on Carter's sacrifice bunt and scored on Taylor's sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Felder ended up recording 4 outs in the 9th on a popout, a dropped 3rd strike and putout at 1st and groundout.
Game 3 at Legion Field in Florence can be heard live at www.post7baseball.com starting at 7:30 pm Wednesday.
Chapin/Newberry 7, Greer 3
Jarrett Whitley had a solo home run as defending state American Legion champion Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24 evened its Best-of-5 series with Greer Post 115.
Game 3 is set for 7 pm Wednesday at Stevens Field.
