Fans of Chapin High School football will have to wait 2 more weeks before seeing their team in action at Cecil Woolbright.
Oncoming bad weather forced the early cancellation of the 3rd annual Aun and McKay Kickoff Classic Saturday night. Flashes of lightning from a storm system traveling from Newberry forced stoppage of Game 3 of the Classic between Gray Collegiate and Mid-Carolina.
At the time, the War Eagles held a 7-3 advantage late in the 1st quarter. They scored on the opening series with a 5-yard touchdown run by K.Z. Adams and the Rebels answered with a 30-yard field goal.
After a 1-hour delay, an announcement was made cancelling the remainder of the Classic. Chapin was scheduled to face Westwood in the finale.
Ironically, the Eagles will play their season-opener Aug. 30 at home against longtime rival Mid-Carolina. The contest will air on WACH 57.
In the earlier games, Barnwell defeated Newberry 28-6 and Spring Valley and Laurens played to an 8-8 tie. The Vikings had an opportunity to win the game as time expired, but missed the field goal.
