Blowfish fall 8-6 to Macon for 6th straight loss

Posted

The luck of the Irish was not enough to help the Lexington County Blowfish snap its losing streak Thursday.
The 8-6 loss to the playoff-bound Macon Bacon on Irish Heritage Night marked a season-worst 6th straight defeat for Lexington County (15-33, 8-14). Should the Blowfish lose one of their final 2 games, they will finish with the worst record in the Coastal Plain League.
Meanwhile, Macon (30-19, 13-10) earned a post-season berth for the 2nd straight year. Because the Savannah Bananas clinched 1st place for both halves for the 2nd straight year, the Bacon earned the 2nd playoff spot out of the South Division based on having the 2nd best overall record.
After the game start was delayed 2 hours, the Bacon took a 1-0 lead in the top 1st as a wild pitch by O'Brien scored a run. The Bacon added 3 runs in the top 3rd as it capitalized off 3 Blowfish errors to take a 4-0 lead.
Fittingly, Lexington County received good fortune in the bottom half of the inning. Three straight walks set up an RBI opportunity for Bailey Gerstner, whose single put the Blowfish on the board and ended the no-hit bid by Bryce Bowen.
An RBI fielder's choice by John McConnon cut the deficit to 4-2. After Bowen hit Houston Wright to drive in the 3rd run of the inning, he was replaced by Jackson Braden.
The 1st batter Braden faced, Ian Jenkins,  hit a groundball which was misplayed by Cory Bivins at 3rd base for an error. This scored the game-tying run and Trace Whetsell of Gilbert High School hit into an RBI double play to put Lexington County ahead 5-4.
An error at shortstop by Daniel Harris on a groundball hit by Aaron Adams of River High School scored Wright to put the Blowfish ahead 6-4.
Macon reclaimed the lead in the 5th with a 3-run rally against reliever Brady Smith. With 2 outs, the Bacon scored off a passed ball, a throwing error by Kitt Cappell at catcher and an RBI single by Logan Fink.
Macon added an insurance run in the top 9th on a fielding error by Peyton Evans at shortstop. Evans singled in the bottom 9th and Gerstner drew a walk to send the winning run to the plate with 1 out.
However, McConnon flied out and Wright struck out to end the game at 12:08 am Friday.
Thursday marked the 1st ever appearance by a female umpire in a Coastal Plain League game. Greta Langhenry got the call up and covered the non-homeplate portion of the infield.
The Blowfish also announced the St. Patrick's Day Parade in downtown Lexington will take place March 14, 2020.
Lexington County plays its final road game of the season Friday at Gastonia. The Blowfish will  close out the 2019 season at home Saturday against the Florence RedWolves.
As part of Fan Appreciation Night, the Blowfish will sponsor the Lexington County Recreation & Aging Commission for a Meals on Wheels Fundraiser. Fans are encouraged to either bring canned food items to replenish the local pantries or make a monetary donation to the Meals on Wheels Program.
In addition, the Blowfish are offering free tickets to fans who arrive at Lexington County Baseball Stadium and donate baseball gear as part of the Partners in Belize Baseball program.
Lexington County will also pay tribute to the 1964 Cayce Dixie Youth Little League World Series Championship team. The surviving team members are expected in attendance.
Following the game, Lexington County will complete its auction of "Fair"-Themed jerseys with proceeds going towards the S.C. State Fair Scholarship Program.
The gates open at 6 pm and the game starts around 7:05 pm. For more information, call (803) 254-FISH (3474) or visit www.blowfishbaseball.com .
