Blowfish pitchers strike out 20 batters in 14-1 win

Posted

After a 2-game slump, the Lexington County Blowfish righted itself again Saturday night at home.
The Blowfish pounded the Bomb Island Bombers 14-1 in 8 innings at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. Despite just 8 hits, Lexington County built an insurmountable led by Tanner Garrison's 4 RBI, including a 3-run homer in the 4th inning, and Luke Orr's 3 RBI.
University of South Carolina product Wes Clarke also belted a 2-run homer in the 5th inning and fellow Gamecock Brennan Milone drove in his team-leading 10th RBI. The Blowfish's 1st 4 runs came courtesy of 3 fielder's choices and a wild pitch.
For all the offense, it was the Blowfish's pitching which dominated the contest. Lexington County sent out 7 pitchers who combined for 20 strikeouts, including 9 straight to open the game by starter Robert Petit Jr., and allowed just 3 hits.
A total of 7 Bombers struck out 2 or more times, with both Shilo Sanders and Gabe Austin fanning 3 times each. Bomb Island did not have a baserunner until Gilbert's Ryan Ouzts drew a 2-out walk in the top 5th from Clemson's Brett Percival.
Grant Bodison led off the 6th with a broken bat infield single off William Westbrock to end the Blowfish's combined no-hitter bid. Jake Roberts had the Bombers' 2nd hit in the 7th.
Reliever Brooks Lucas struck out Sanders for the official 3rd out to end the game on the mercy rule. The Bombers received a final at bat and Gabe Austin singled to score Bodison from 3rd base.
Up next for Lexington County (5-3, 1-3) is a trip to Savannah, Ga. to face the Bananas Monday at 7:05 pm. The Blowfish return home Wednesday to face the Lake Murray Purple Martins.
