With the regular season winding down, the Lexington County Blowfish has no room for error in its quest to win the Southern Summerball Series.
Going undefeated in the last 9 meetings against the Macon Bacon and Savannah Bananas would give the Blowfish a winning record.
Under the Series rules, the cup winner will be determined by the best winning percentage.
Thursday night at Luther Williams Field, Lexington County helped its cause with a victory at Macon. The victory snapped a 6-game losing streak to the Bacon dating back to last season.
Charleston Southern's Robert Petit Jr. struck out 6 and allowed just 2 hits in 5 innings of work. This allowed the Blowfish to build a 6-0 lead, the big hit coming on a 2-run single by Dutch Fork graduate Ward Hacklen which scored 3 runs in a 5-run inning.
University of South Carolina infielder Wes Clarke also had 2 RBI, including a solo home run in the 8th inning to put Lexington County up 8-1. This proved critical as Macon (18-18,10-13) got a 3-run homer from Jake Rubinstein in the bottom 9th off Gamecock reliever Andrew Peters.
Prior to Peters, Will Abbott and Christian Edwards combined for 3 scoreless innings of relief.
Thursday was another split doubleheader for the Blowfish. Back in Lexington, the Blowfish squad fell 11-9 to the Lake Murray Purple Martins.
It was the final meeting of the season between the 2 teams. The Purple Martins were outhit 9-7 and committed 6 errors, but got 3 RBI from Gabe Austin to hold off a late rally and earn their 1st win in 6 tries against the Blowfish.
This was the 2nd straight loss in the Lake Murray Cup Series for the Blowfish, who have already clinched the trophy with a 10-2 record.
The Blowfish (16-8, 4-7) will 'Play 2' Friday, this time both games at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. They face the front-running Savannah Bananas (20-9, 15-9) in 2, 7-inning games, the 1st starting at 6 pm.
