Brookland-Cayce advances to Region 5-3A final

Bearcats head to Orangeburg-Wilkinson Wednesday

Posted

During 9 seasons under head coach Robert Wells, Brookland-Cayce boys basketball have yet to miss the playoffs.
The streak continued Monday night following the 64-38 rout of Fox Creek in the semifinals of the Region 5-3A tournament.
"It means a lot to us," Wells said. "I've been here 9 years and I think all 9 years we've made the playoffs. So, we're very proud, very excited, but we still got a big game come Wednesday night against (Orangeburg-Wilkinson) for the region championship."
Jahmari Kennerly scored 16 points after a scoreless 1st quarter and Troy McCant added 13 to lead the Bearcats (9-3, 4-1). Cedric Shelby had 9 points and Aubrey Richardson finished with 8 as Brookland-Cayce won its 4th straight game and defeated the Predators for the 2nd time this season at home.
The Bearcats took control early, jumping out to a 18-6 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The lead remained at double digits through the 3rd quarter when a 7-0 run by Fox Creek brought it within 34-26.
Jadon Johnson led the Predators with 10 points.
Brookland-Cayce answered with 6 straight points and had a 40-26 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. It then dominated the 4th quarter, doubling the Predators' output 24-12 and leading as many as 28 points.
Standing in the way of a region title is top-seed Orangeburg-Wilkinson. It rolled to a 70-38 win over Swansea and will invite the Bearcats to the Bruins' Den to play for the region title and top seed for the Class 3A playoffs at 7 pm Wednesday. Tymir Lowman and Antonio Jackson had 12 points each for the Tigers.
The game can be heard by clicking on the link for The Dove 1620.
"I think we've got to just be ready to show up and play," Wells said. "We're not happy about going there. We never got a chance to play OW this year, but I guess due to our region seeding, somehow they got homecourt advantage. So we've got to be ready to go down there Wednesday night and play. I think our guys will be prepared. We'll be very excited to play for a region championship."
"We're ready," Kennerly said. "We're ready for anything."
