Some questions hovered Friday over White Knoll when it took the field at home Friday against Chapin.
How would the Timberwolves perform without star quarterback Aveon Smith after his season-ending left knee injury in last week’s loss to Lexington? Could it build a game strategy around backup Jaelin Gray, starting his first full outing.
The answer was a definite yes as White Knoll moved the football and made some big plays. In the final seconds, however, the Timberwolves were edged out by the Eagles 38-35.
The Eagles (4-3, 1-1) struck first in the early minutes of the game with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Roger Pedroni to Zavier Short.
The Timberwolves’ Darius Derrick-Jones then ran the ensuing kickoff back for a 90-yard return for a White Knoll touchdown to tie the game 7-7.
Chapin struck back immediately, with another touchdown pass from Pedroni to Short. This went for 51 yards and a 14-7 lead quickly became a 21-7 lead when the Timberwolves fumbled the kickoff return. The Eagles recovered at the White Knoll 20-yard line, taking it in for the score two plays later.
In the second quarter, the Timberwolves put together their best sustained drive. It ended with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Gray to Davin Caulder with 2:46 left in the half.
In the 3rd quarter, Chapin and White Knoll traded scores. Pedroni rushed in for an Eagles’ touchdown to extend the lead to 28-14. Gray answered with a rushing score and a touchdown pass to Derrick-Jones to tie the game.
West Hiller from Chapin kicked a 25-yard field goal to put the Eagles up 31-28.
After each team failed to convert a drive into points, the Timberwolves put together a scoring drive capped with a 3 yard T. J. Peebles touchdown run to give them their first lead of the game at 35-31 with only 3:09 remaining in the game.
The Eagles were not done yet. They worked the clock and marched down the field from their own 35 to score on a quarterback keeper from Pedroni with 27 seconds left in the game to take the lead.
White Knoll’s efforts to score in the final seconds were cut short by a Josh Calloway interception of Gray to end the game.
Gray went 19-30 for 216 passing yards and Derrick-Jones led the Timberwolves in receiving yards with 97.
Pedroni was 22-31 passing for 312 passing yards and Short had 206 receiving yards.
Chapin plays host to River Bluff next week, while White Knoll (5-2, 0-2) plays host to Spring Valley.
