In a span of three hours Wednesday at Smith Road Complex, Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24 moved within a victory of the S.C. American Legion tournament.
Down 0-1 to Greenwood Post 20, Chapin/Newberry claimed Games 2 and 3 at home. It completed the 6-4 victory in Game 2, a contest suspended in the Bottom 7th due to rain a night earlier.
Play resumed with the score 6-3 in favor of Chapin/Newberry. Post 20 had a baserunner at first base and proceeded to add a run before Wesley Livingston entered the game in relief and recorded the final three outs.
In Game 3, Greenwood Post 20 outhit Chapin/Newberry 7-3. However, it was held scoreless for six innings by starting pitcher Jonathan Bickley.
The Mid-Carolina High School graduate overcame a laceration on his throwing left hand to finish with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed.
Will Kroski accounted for one of the hits in the bottom 1st on an RBI single. Post 193/24 added a run in the third on an RBI walk by Deric Hanko of Dutch Fork High School.
Back-to-back doubles by Hanko and Hunter Clinton resulted in two more runs in the sixth. Tanner Folk scored Hanko on a sacrifice fly and Price Alexander drove home Clinton with a sacrifice bunt.
Andrew Fulmer relieved Bickley in the seventh. He struck out Logan Bruce to lead off the at-bat, then saw two baserunners reach on an error and double, respectively.
Fulmer got a second strikeout, but gave up an RBI single to Taylor Johnson to end the shutout bid. J.D. Dilleshaw was the tying run at the plate, but he ended the game in the same manner as Game 2 with a flyout to the outfield.
Game 4 is set for Thursday at Legion Field in Greenwood. The Upstate Region championship series would conclude, if necessary, with a deciding game Friday back at Newberry College.
The winner advances to the 4-team state tournament and will open Monday at Piedmont Region champion Gaffney Post 109. Gaffney advanced after closing out Fort Mill in a 3-game sweep with Wednesday's 7-6 win on a walkoff single by Ashby Smith.
