Chronicle Country girls basketball teams fall on opening night of post-season

Posted

Irmo and Northside Christian girls opened post-season play Friday, while the Gray Collegiate girls looked to join them.
All 3 teams came out on the losing end as each fell into double-digit deficits early they were unable to overcome.

Landrum 52, Gray Collegiate 34
The Lady Cardinals' tandem of Savannah Brown and Malani Hanes accounted for a combined 35 points against the Lady War Eagles.
Landrum jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Gray Collegiate outscored the Lady Cardinals 9-6 in the 2nd quarter and got within 3 points, but still trailed 22-17.
A 13-0 run to open the 3rd quarter put the game in control for Landrum. Despite Adrian Frye's game-high 21 points and accounting for 10 of her team's 16 2nd half points, Gray Collegiate fell behind as many as 25 points.
Brown finished with 18 points and Hanes added 17 for Landrum, who now travel to Christ Church for the opening round of the Class 2A Upper State playoffs.

Westside 48, Irmo 38
For the 2nd straight year, the Lady Yellow Jackets' season ends in the Upstate.
Irmo trailed 12-4 at the end of the 1st quarter. Down 24-12 at halftime, the Lady Yellow Jackets opened the 2nd half on a 5-0 run to get within 24-17.
The Lady Rams answered with a 9-6 run to push their lead back to double digits.
Irmo made a late run to get within 4 points, but were held scoreless over the final 3:54.
Westside will play host to Saturday's Greenville/Catawba Ridge winner on Wednesday.

Spartanburg Day 50, Northside Christian 36

For 3 of the 4 quarters, the Lady Crusaders were more than the equal of the Lady Griffins.
The 1st quarter, however, was a different story and was the difference in the game.
Northside Christian found itself staring at a 18-0 deficit at the end of the opening period. It was a combination of cold shooting on the Lady Crusaders' part, combined with balanced scoring by the Lady Griffins.
A jumper by Natalie Walke with 7:11 left in the 2nd quarter ended the scoring drought. The Lady Crusaders also responded by outscoring Spartanburg Day14-8 in the 2nd quarter to cut the deficit to 26-14 at halftime.
With a supportive home crowd in attendance at Heathwood Hall, Northside Christian continued its comeback into the 3rd quarter. Shandrea Pringle led the offense with a game-high 15 points and a running hook shot by Madison Stutts brought the Lady Crusaders to within 5 points with less than 3 mintues left in the 3rd quarter.
Back-to-back baskets to end the 3rd quarter pushed Spartanburg Day's lead to 35-26. Carly Garrity finished with 9 points and Raegan Cash and Marianna Converse each had 8 for the Lady Griffins.
Northside Christian got no closer than 8 points the rest of the way, outscored 15-10 in the 4th quarter.
