Should the prep football season take place this year, several Chronicle Country teams will see plenty of airtime.

WACH Fox 57 released its “Friday Night Rivals” schedule for the 2020 high school football season. A total of 10 Chronicle Country teams will appear in 6 games during the 10-week slate of games.

It kicks off in Week 0 (Aug. 21) with Lugoff-Elgin visiting “The Swamp” to face River Bluff. The following week (Aug. 28) is the “Battle of Irmo” at W.C. Hawkins Stadium when 4-time defending Class 5A champion Dutch Fork meets Irmo, now competing in Class 4A.

In Week 4 (Sept. 18), Gilbert takes its 4-0 record in WACH 57 games on the road to face former region rival Pelion, now in Class 2A. Week 5 (Sept. 25) features a rematch from last year’s Class 4A 2nd round playoff matchup between Lower Richland and Airport.

The Eagles won 42-6 in Hopkins and will play host to the Diamond-Hornets.

Week 8 (Oct. 9) features a Region 5-5A matchup between White Knoll and Chapin at Cecil Woolbright Field. The contest will be a “Homecoming” for “Friday Night Rivals” analyst and Chapin and University of South Carolina alumnus Mason Zandi. Stacey Hough will once again handle the play-by-play duties.

Week 9 (Oct. 16) features another “Homecoming” affair. Newberry and head coach Phil Strickland pay a visit to Batesburg-Leesville, where he led the Panthers to 2 Class 2A titles in 1995 and 1999.

The games will air on Channel 1250 or streamed at www.wach.com or the WACH 57 phone app.
