The 8th ranked Airport girls’ basketball team found themselves down early in the Eagles’ Nest against Hartsville in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
A 28-point fourth quarter propelled the Lady Eagles to a 52-43 victory over the Lady Silver Foxes.
Both teams combined for 33 turnovers in the first half as Hartsville led Airport 19-16 at halftime.
Things went from bad to worse as Hartsville extended the lead to double digits in the third quarter.
Jayla Jamison had 8 of the Lady Eagles’ first 16 points, but found herself in early foul trouble which limited her playing time in the third quarter.
Her absence showed as the Eagles couldn’t get a shot to fall.
The fourth quarter saw a deliberate pace turn frenetic, and Airport battled back, inching back into a game that few saw them winning early on.
Hartsville found themselves in foul trouble, putting Airport in the bonus for much of the fourth quarter. A key 3-pointer by Jolisa Collyn spurred the Lady Eagles’ comeback as defensive pressure helped force turnovers, runouts, and easy layups for a struggling Airport offense.
Jamison led the Lady Eagles (18-8) with 14 points. They will stay at home Friday for the second-round matchup against A.C. Flora, a 53-51 winner over North Myrtle Beach.
