Club tennis in college molded Briam Lim into a state tennis championship coach

Posted

Brian Lim interest in tennis started playing tennis at the age of 8 when he started taking lessons at the Golden Hills Country Club from Nancy Powell, a friend of his dad.
The future River Bluff tennis coach fell in love with the sport and made friends when he played in the junior leagues and tournaments around the country.  Brian was also a standout on his high school tennis team at Lexington high school where he played junior varsity from 2009-11. The team was successful as they won region each year and finished state runner-up in his junior and senior year.
Lim’s love for tennis was so prominent he even played tennis at the University of South Carolina. Instead of the collegiate team, he played club tennis where he was the captain.
He explained club tennis are collegiate tennis clubs sponsored by the United States Tennis Association’s tennis on campus league. The competition levels of club tennis rivals that of many NCAA Division I and II colleges, considering that some club tennis teams have players who are ex-collegiate players.
Furthermore, the program was designed to provide team camaraderie, networking, and unrivaled competition through tennis without the demands of collegiate tennis. In addition, the top club tennis teams were able to compete for regional and national championships.
Before taking the head position of the tennis teams at River Bluff, Lim had already been developing his coaching skills while in high school where he gave private lessons to younger players from the local neighborhoods. Eventually, he started working at the Quail Hollow Swim and Racquet Club in West Columbia where he gave private lessons and ran group clinics for junior players alongside current River Bluff assistant Natalie Horne, When River Bluff opened in 2013, Lim served two seasons as junior varsity boys’ team coach and was promoted to the head varsity coaching position in the fall of 2015. He did this while pursuing his masters in teaching full-time at South Carolina.
Last season, the Lady Gators won their first-ever Class 5A title. On Oct. 4, they defeated Chapin to improve to 11-2 overall, 6-0 in Region 5-5A and claim a third consecutive region tittle. Lim’s goal for this year is to repeat as state champions in the fall and have the boys’ tennis team compete for a region title in the spring in a tough region due to realignment.
