COLUMBIA - Behind a season-high 17 hits and 3 home runs, the University of South Carolina baseball team jumped out with 11 runs in the first four innings and cruised to a 14-3 win over No. 23 Clemson Sunday afternoon at Founders Park.
The win in the rubber match clinched the 3-game Palmetto Series.
Senior T.J. Hopkins, playing in his last Clemson series, went 4-5 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored in the win. On the weekend, Hopkins was 6-14 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI on his way to earning for the 2nd time in his career the Tom Price Award, given to the Gamecock Most Valuable Player of the series.
Redshirt sophomore Luke Berryhill belted 2 home runs and went 3-4 with 5 RBI and 3 runs scored. Noah Campbell also had 3 hits and scored 2 runs while Andrew Eyster and Chris Cullen had 2 hits apiece.
Junior Reid Morgan earned his 2nd win of the season, pitching 6 2/3 innings, striking out 5 while allowing 8 hits and 2 earned runs with no walks.
After Clemson scored a run in the first on an RBI double from Kyle Wilkie, the Gamecocks erupted for 5 runs as Hopkins' double drove in 2 and Berryhill brought in 3 with a home run down the left field line.
Jacob Olson made it 6-1 with a sacrifice fly to left in the 2nd inning.
South Carolina (9-2) scored five more runs in the 4th. Brady Allen brought in a run with a single up the middle. Hopkins then homered to left, his 4th of the year. Berryhill added a 2-run home run to center, making it 11-1.
Clemson scored 2 in the top of the 6th, but South Carolina answered right back with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame. The Gamecocks loaded the bases after an Eyster single, Berryhill walk and Cullen single. Jordan Holladay singled in a run, then Berryhill scored on a wild pitch. The last run came home on George Callil's sacrifice fly to right.
Sam Hall had 3 hits to lead Clemson. Justin Wrobleski took the loss for the Tigers, allowing 5 runs and 5 hits in 1/3 innings of work.
The 14 runs were the most for South Carolina in the Clemson series since March 3, 2001 when the Gamecocks beat the Tigers, 21-8 at Clemson. South Carolina is now 84-68-1 all-time in Columbia verses the Tigers.
Up next is a 4 p.m. matchup Tuesday at home against The Citadel. The Bulldogs won last year's meeting in Columbia 4-3 as pitcher and former Lexington High School state champion Jordan Buster struck out 5 in 2 2/3 innings of work to earn the victory.
