It was “Western Night” in “The Swamp” Friday night as a standing room only “Homecoming” crowd looked to cheer River Bluff to an upset win over top-ranked Dutch Fork.
The visiting, 2-time defending Class 5A champions were unfazed by the fellow undefeated Gators. The Silver Foxes continued their run of dominance with a 56-14 win.
Quarterback Ty Olenchuk completed 20-24 passes for 288 yards and 3 touchdowns and running back Rob Huff added 4 scores for Dutch Fork (6-0, 2-0). The Silver Foxes outgained River Bluff 521-161 and held the Gators to 9 first downs.
The victory helped Dutch Fork improve on some notable statistics:
18th consecutive overall win
18th consecutive region win
15th straight road win
50 points scored in all six games this season
17 quarters scoring 14 or more points
10 quarters scoring 21 or more points
Outscoring opponents 376-56
“We came out sharp,” Dutch Fork head coach Tom Knotts said. “We played very well in the first half. The defense did their normal job. The offense did what they normally do. So, pretty solid in all phases of the game. I’m glad to see us not let our guard down.”
For the sixth straight game, Olenchuk opened the scoring for Dutch Fork with a touchdown pass. Once again, wide receiver Jalin Hyatt snagged a 1-handed pass in the endzone from 8 yards to put Dutch Fork up 7-0.
The Silver Foxes proceeded to score on their next five possessions. Backup Graeson Underwood substituted one play for Olenchuk after he took a hard fall at the River Bluff 1 and scored on a 1-yard run.
Just before the end of the first quarter, Olenchuk connected with Gage Zirke for a 36-yard touchdown. The second quarter was dominated by Hoff, who scored on runs of 10, 3 and 11 yards and converted two downs of 20 and 25 yards to extend the scoring drives.
Hoff opened the third quarter with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Olenchuk. The fourth quarter opened with Cleburne Gray scoring on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Michael Rikard to end Dutch Fork’s shutout bid.
The Silver Foxes’ second team answered with a 13-play, 62-yard scoring drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Jon Hall. River Bluff closed out the scoring with a 11-yard touchdown run by Riley Myers with 28 seconds left.
Dutch Fork will remain on the road next week to face Lexington. River Bluff (5-1, 1-1) will look to rebound at home next week against Chapin.
“We knew they’re a good football team obviously and we want to be in that caliber and we’re going to learn and grown from this and watch it Sunday with our players and just continue to move forward and these next three regions are very tough” Gators head coach C. Blair Hardin said. “We’ve got a very tough region, so it’s important we get healthy and get ready for this.”
