Five Lexington County athletes named Players of the Year by S.C. Coaches Association of Women's Sports

Award ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at the South Carolina High School League building.

A quintet of Lexington County female athletes were recognized by the South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports.

All were named Athletes of the Year in their respective sports and will be honored during a banquet at 1 p.m. Sunday at the S.C. High School League office. 

The list of local honorees are:

CLASS 5A BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Olivia Thompson (Lexington High School)

The University of South Carolina-bound guard and all-time leading scorer in school history averaged 19.9 points and 2.2 assists per game in leading Lexington to 24 victories, the Region 5-5A title and first Lower State final appearance in 40 years.

CLASS 3A BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Danae McNeal (Swansea)

The Clemson University-bound guard/forward averaged 24.5 points, 12.6 rebounds and 4.7 steals per game this past season for the Region 5-3A champion Lady Tigers.

She was previously named state Player of the Year by both USA Today and Gatorade,  earned a 3rd consecutive Class 3A Player of the Year honor from the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association and was Lexington Chronicle Co-Player of the Year with Thompson.

CLASS 5A TRACK & FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Kaniya Johnson (White Knoll)

The Lady Timberwolves’ freshman won gold in the 100, 200 and 400 meters at the S.C. Track and Field Championships held this past May.

CLASS 4A TRACK & FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Jayla Jamison (Airport)

For the second straight year, the Airport HIgh School rising sophomore takes the award after reaping 4 gold medals (100, 200 and 400 meters and long jump).

CLASS 5A LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Jordan Green (Chapin)

The midfielder and recent Lady Eagle graduateled the program to their first-ever state title in Class 5A and undefeated season at 16-0. She finished with 63 goals and 33 assists this past season.
