FOOTBALL IS BACK - SCISA schools Northside Christian and W.W. King open preseason practices

Posted

The wait is over for at least 2 Chronicle Country high school football teams.
Preseason practice began officially Thursday for SCISA schools W.W. King and Northside Christian Academy. Like the S.C. High School League teams who will open camp Friday, the Knights and Crusaders will use the first few sessions to acclimate and conditioning their respective players before starting full contact drills.
With school slated to begin Sept. 2, Northside Christian only had a portion of its full roster for the opening drills. A total of 12 players took part in lifting weights while 7  participated in non-contact drills for close to 90 minutes.
The Crusaders find themselves once again transitioning in classification. A year after moving up to 11-man, where it finished 1-9, changes in school numbers have resulted in Northside Christian moving back down to 8-man Region I for the 2019 campaign.
The team can only hope to duplicate the success enjoyed 2 years ago at that level when it finished state runner-up. Third-year head coach Stacy Bell is more focused right now on reinforcing the basics and is encouraged by his team's preseason conditioning.
"Conditioning, I think we are in very good shape," Bell said. "Our summer program, we had very good attendance. We lifted Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and switched that up a little bit and it seemed to be something the kids enjoyed. It gave them time off, but gave them plenty of time to work."
Bell said the goals right now is to represent the school the right way and show improvement every day. The Crusaders will hold their first scrimmage Aug. 10 at home against Holly Hill Academy and participate in a Jamboree at Calhoun Academy on Aug. 16. They will return to St. Matthews a week later for the Week 0 opener.
