FRIDAY NIGHT GIRLS HOOPS Lexington defeats Dutch Fork in critical Region 5-5A contest.

Avenging losses are starting to become a habit for 8th ranked Lexington High School.

For the second time in 3 weeks, the Lady Wildcats got a measure of revenge. This time, it was against a Dutch Fork team which defeated them 53-50 on Jan. 15 and entered Friday’s contest looking to clinch Region 5-5A.

Instead, Lexington pulled away in the 4th quarter for a 45-31 victory to move into a first-place tie in the lost column with 2 games remaining. Should the two teams remain deadlocked at the end of the season, they will play a 1-game playoff at a neutral site to determine the champion.

“We do not like to lose and so, we really focused hard at practice,” Lexington head coach Molly Goodrich said. “We’ve been focusing a lot on defense and rebounding and taking care of the ball, not that we did that great tonight, but we had revenge on our mind for quite a while.”

Senior Olivia Thompson scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the first half. She was impeded by the lingering effects of food poisoning suffered earlier in the week, but teammates like Claire Tarlton provided a timely boost.

Tarlton scored 12 points, including a critical 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter after Dutch Fork got within 5 points. Thompson and Brooke Foulks managed to close out the scoring for the Lady Wildcats.

“Winning games is a team thing, so all of us have our own roles and play our own parts in the game and all of us rely on each other for our wins.”

Lexington travels to Chapin Tuesday, while Dutch Fork faces archrival Irmo.

Taylor Jones led the Lady Silver Foxes with 10 points.
