FRIDAY NIGHT HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL - Lighning delays leave several Week 0 games unfinished

Dutch Fork/Mallard Creek play to 27-27 weather-shortened tie

Posted

Inclimate weather was the dominant storyline in Week 0 of the South Carolina High School football season.

At least 4 games went uncompleted as a result of lightning delays. The most high profile contest saw 3-time defending Class 5A champion Dutch Fork and Mallard Creek out of North Carolina play to a 27-27 tie on the ESPN Family of Networks.

The game was delayed for over an hour after the 1st quarter. Dutch Fork held a 14-7 lead as quarterback Ty Olenchuk threw 2 touchdowns to Jalin Hyatt and Elijah Spencer.

Once play resumed, the Mavericks answered with an 82-yard touchdown run by Trent Simpson and a 50-yard fumble recovery TD by J. Washington to take a 20-14 lead.

Before halftime, Olenchuk found Hyatt for 3 yards to tie the game at 20-20. The 3rd quarter saw both teams exchange touchdowns, Olenchuk and Hyatt hooking up for the 3rd time and Brian Robinson scoring from 2 yards.

Both teams had opportunities to take the lead in the 4th quarter. Dutch Fork’s Graham Newboult missed a 29-yard field goal and play was stopped with 4:46 left with Mallard Creek facing a 3rd and 14 at the Silver Foxes’ 15.

With even more torrential rainfall with the lightning during the 2nd delay, the decision was made to call the game. The decision means Dutch Fork now has a 26-game undefeated streak.

Olenchuk finished 23-36 with 295 yards and 4 TDs for Dutch Fork, while Simpson rushed for 182 yards and a score for the Mavericks.

The Silver Foxes return to action Aug. 30 at Spring Valley. They will look to also extend their 19-game road-winning streak.

While the Dutch Fork/Mallard Creek game was called, the other 3 contests will all resume tomorrow.

  • Gray Collegiate at Gilbert (The Indians lead 34-32 at halftime. Game will resume at 11 am.

  • Irmo at Lexington (The Wildcats lead 14-6 with 6:57 left in the 4th quarter. They have the football 2nd and goal at the Irmo 6. Game will resume at 11 am.
