Lady Eagles snap Lexington girls' 47-match region win streak

The 1st year in a new Class 5A region is going almost like the last season in Class 4A for Chapin.

The Eagles’ 5-0 win over White Knoll Friday at home completed the 1st 3-game series sweep by a Region 5-5A team. Chapin now stands alone in 1st place with a 5-1 region mark.

Tyler Teal, Jarett Whitley and J.P. Hornick all drove in runs for Chapin, who got a 5-strikeout performance in 6 innings by Chris Veach. The Eagles also capitalized off 5 White Knoll errors.

Alex Lyon took the loss for the Timberwolves, allowing 7 runs and 5 runs and striking out 5.

Chapin will next face Mid-Carolina Saturday before starting a 3-game series at River Bluff.

River Bluff 9, Dutch Fork 0

Alex Urban homered and he, Cameron Ferrell and Micah Arthur all had 2 hits as the Gators took 2 of 3 games against the Silver Foxes.

Jack Benedict picked up the win for River Bluff (8-2, 2-1), which opens a 3-game series against Chapin Monday.

Aiken 3, Airport 2

Colby Key and Cam Beckham both drove in runs, but a 2-run rally lifted the Fighting Green Hornets to victory.

Dalton Mims took the loss after striking out 5 batters.

Gilbert 12, Edisto 2

Dawson Burkett went 2-3 and Travis Elliott improved to 2-0 on the season for the Indians (8-2)

Midland Valley 10, Brookland-Cayce 0

Batesburg-Leesville 2, Silver Bluff 1

SOFTBALL

Lexington 12, Chapin 1

Allie Light went 3-3 with a home run and 4 RBI and struck out 9 to lead the Lady Wildcats.

Sarah Gordon went 3-4 and Skyler Logsdon and Peri Rouillard had 2 hits for Lexington, who play host to River Bluff Tuesday.

White Knoll 7, River Bluff 0

Andrea Lyon struck out 15 batters and Hannah Goodwin and Shelby Davies both homered to lead the defending Class 5A champions.

Davies drove in 2 runs and she and Libby Williams each had 2 hits for White Knoll (9-0, 3-0). It travels to Midland Valley on Saturday.

Gilbert 6, Edisto 0

Savana Rosson struck out 11 batters and Abbie Marlowe was 2-3 with a run scored for the Lady Indians.

Rachel Bass was 1-2 with a run and RBI for Gilbert.

Airport 10, Midland Valley 0 (6 innings)

Hannah Fisher went 3-4 with a home run and 4 RBI and struck out 15 to lead the Lady Eagles (4-3, 3-2).

Caliegh Corbitt went 2-3 with a home run and 2 RBI, Maddy Rivers drove in 2 runs and Angell Weaver had 2 hits.

North Augusta 20, Brookland-Cayce 0 (4 innings)

GIRLS SOCCER

Chapin 0, Lexington 0 (Chapins wins 4-2 in PKs)

For the 1st time in 5 years, the Lady Wildcats lost a region game.

After a scoreless regulation and 2 overtimes, the Lady Eagles (3-6-1, 1-3) won on penalty kicks for their first region win.

This marked the first region loss for Lexington since May 5, 2014 to Blythewood.

Up next for the Lady Wildcats (7-5, 2-1) is a road trip to The Swamp to face River Bluff.

River Bluff 2, White Knoll 0

Jordan Mishoe and Maddie Poole accounted for the 2 goals by the undefeated Lady Gators.

River Bluff (13-0-1, 4-0) plays host to Lexington Tuesday.

BOYS SOCCER

Chapin 2, Lexington 1

Josh Lochstampfor connected on a penalty kick for the go-ahead goal with 15 minutes left to lead the Eagles over the Wildcats.

Tyler Martin’s goal gave Chapin a 1-0 halftime lead. At the 63-minute mark, Sam Pent tied the game on an assist by Travis Sewell.

Lexington (7-4-1, 2-1) travels to River Bluff Tuesday, while the Eagles (5-5, 2-2) face Dreher at Memorial Stadium.

River Bluff 4, White Knoll 0

The Gators improved to 7-3 overall, 2-1 in Region 5-5A.
