Gators overcome early adversity, power outage to win first-ever home playoff game

River Bluff travels to Berkeley for Round 2

Out of the darkness and into the light.
What sounded like a biblical account literally played itselt out Friday night in The Swamp.
A car accident on Corley Mill Road resulted in a power outage affecting a stretch of 1,000 Lexington residents. This included River Bluff High School where the football team was involved in its first-ever home playoff game against Conway.
At the time of the stoppage, the Gators trailed 6-0 with 3:59 left in the first quarter.
Once play resumed about 25 minutes later, River Bluff took the lead and went on to defeat the Tigers 35-19.
"You know, stuff happens," said Gators' head coach Christopher Hardin about the power outage. "Our kids came out, stayed focused and put together a good game against a very talented football team. So we're proud of our guys."
Quarterback Michael Rikard threw four touchdowns to lead the Gators (9-1), who set a single-season team record for victories. Despite the early deficit and game interruption, Rikard remained in positive spirits.
"That was pretty funny," he said. "I'm not going to lie. Because we went in (the lockerroom), we talked about it and, honestly, it was just kind of at the beginning of the game. So we went out there, started the game over again and had the same focus."
A blocked punt set up Rikard's first touchdown pass from 3 yards to Riley Myers. The PAT by Coltin Hallman put the Gators up 7-6.
On River Bluff's next series, Rikard threw a screen pass to Tyson Trottier who raced up the middle of the field into the endzone for a 75-yard touchdown to make it 14-6.
A 40-yard touchdown run by Xavier Kinlaw brought Conway to within 14-12. The Tigers were unable to make the 2-point conversion after the extra point on the game's first score was blocked.
With 34 seconds left before halftime, Rikard drove the Gators downfield and found Austin Murton for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Conway (3-7) closed the gap to 21-19 in the third quarter on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Daquinton Grady to Keimone Graham. River Bluff (9-1) closed out the victory with 14 straight points.
Antonio Gantt scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in finishing with 167 rushing yards in place of injured starter Braden Walker. In the fourth quarter, Rikard closed out his 4-TD performance with a 62-yard scoring pass to Fellers Wise.
He finished 7-11 passing for 162 yards.
"(Rikard) grew up tonight," Hardin said. "He got hit a lot and I was really proud of how he responded and just hung in there and did a good job battling for our team and made some good throws and plays for us."
Up next for the Gators is a trip to Moncks Corner to face Berkeley. Like River Bluff, the Stags rallied from a first half defict and pulled away for a 48-33 victory.
Irmo finished the season with a 5-5 record.
