GEORGE BRYAN GOLF COLUMN - Family time on the course

Posted

Golf is Challenging but easy” was 5 year old Bernice Reed’s comment after the 1st “Family Golf Fun Preview” program conducted on the new “Grow Golf Now” facility in Chapin.

This comment from the new youth golfer represented the mission and design purpose of the new Swing Balance Impact Conditioning golf skill building curriculum, according to Mike Ramsey with Swing Balance.

“Our Impact conditioning and entire golf division is devoted to accelerating skill development,” he said. “Impact conditioning is a golf movement education initiative created around the Tsunami Bar Sports technology.”

The Swing Balance Golf Lab is located in West Columbia and part of the Tsunami Bar Sports Training Center.

Just prior to the 5 year old’s comment, her mother, Barbara Reed, had just made this comment about the brand new Family Golf Initiative.

“What I liked best is the unencumbered time we could spend together with all family members engaged, having fun learning golf,” Reed said.

The Reeds are new to golf and participated in the first ever “Family Golf Fun & Facilitating Preview.”

According to Chase Butler, this program was part of the preparation for the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission’s “Family Golf Program” that kicks off the spring of 2020.

“The Lexington County Recreation Family Golf Program targets young families with young children and looks a little like the recreational youth soccer or baseball programs and a bit like dance or martial arts,” he said. “The majority of the golf skill will be introduced and refined at the Recreation Center with parents serving as coaches or team leaders.

“The last few weeks of the season will be at the course. Charwood Country Club along with Timberlake Country Club are two local clubs hosting the LCRAC’s inaugural spring season.

If learning is fun, golf can be easy and with the new Grow Golf ‘Challenger Course’.

Improvement takes place fast.

“When we first started the course, my kids were just wildly swinging,” commented Charla Draper, who has 5-year-old twin boys, along with girls ages 8 and 10. “But within 10 minutes, they had made significant progress hitting the ball. When it’s fun, kids will participate.”

Butler is one of the PGA Golf Professionals on the LCRAC team ushering in the brand new program and had this to say about the new golf family learning course.

“The GGN Challenger Course is supposed to be played fast,” he said. “It is an age and skill level appropriate designed layout that is friendly to complicated schedules. Larger than golf standard groups can play together and the furthest point from the parking lot is less than 300 yards, so quick exits are easy. Golf can now be played fast and in larger groups and our format is designed to more appealing to moms.”

B.J. Belville is the Assistant Athletics Director and his phone line is (803) 359-4048 (Ext. 240). It’s a new program, just added to the LCRAC website and registration is open now.

In local golf news, Country Club of Lexington member Louise Given has been on a ‘heater run’ of late. In addition to winning a WSCGA One Day State at True Blue in Myrtle Beach, she had a Hole in 1 in a separate round.

‘Weezy’ which is her grandmom name, flushed a perfect 9 iron on number 2 at the Country Club of Lexington for an ace and it was witnessed by Linda and Steve Kernen, also members at the Country Club of Lexington.
