Gilbert defeats Strom Thurmond for 12th straight region win in volleyball

Posted

For the Gilbert High School volleyball team, this season is all about T.C.B. (taking care of business).
Jumping out to early leads and rarely relenting, the Lady Indians have wasted little time defeating most of their opponents. According to head coach Jackie Shealy, her team's natural killer instinct has enabled them to maintain their intensity throughout the matches.
"They really like to get a good start out and they're playing very well," Shealy said. "One of the things that they want to do is to be very consistent and they've made it a goal for every match to get out and be high energy, intense out there so they can set the tone for the match."
On Thursday, Gilbert solidified its hold on the Region 5-3A title won last year with a 3-set win over archrival Strom Thurmond. The scores were 25-16, 25-19, 25-18.
Despite a 1-week layout, Shealy was pleased with her team's timing and said having the varsity and junior varsity teams practice against each other helped maintained their sharpness.
It was the 12th consecutive region win dating back to 2017 for the Lady Indians (15-2, 2-0). Their lone losses this season took place at the Battle of the Bluff championship at River Bluff High School to Spring Valley and the host team in the tournament final.
Up next for Gilbert is a road trip to Cordova to face Edisto. Read more about the Lady Indians in the Sept. 26 print edition of the Lexington County Chronicle.
