Gilbert, OW volleyball match to resume Wednesday

Play halted early in 2nd set

Posted

In 2-plus decades as a volleyball head coach, Jackie Shealy has not seen anything like what occurred Tuesday at Swansea High School.

Her Gilbert High School team were looking to regain momentum in its matchup against Orangeburg-Wilkinson for the region title. After dropping the 1st set 25-23, the Lady Indians took a 2-0 advantage on the Bruinettes.

It was during the 2nd point, however, when play was stopped after the volleyball saved by a OW player went upward and bounced off the cover of a ceiling light inside the gymnasium.

The force of the ball forced open the cover, leaving it hanging above the Bruinette players.

After 15-plus minutes and Swansea personnel unable to re-close the cover, the officials agreed to half play until 6 pm Wednesday.

“This is 1 of those things though you can’t control,” Shealy said. “Swansea is going to get it corrected and we’ll just show back up tomorrow ready to play and pick up where we left off.”

Down a set, Shealy told her players to watch film and re-focus themselves for Wednesday.

O-W and Gilbert have split their 2 meetings this season, both winning at home. The winner of Wednesday’s match will open the Class 3A playoffs at home against Crestwood on Oct. 27, while the loser will begin at Camden.
