B-C's Wells gets 100th, Irmo's Williams and Whipple continue to climb in career wins

The Irmo girls’ basketball team joined their male counterpart in clinching a Region 4-5A title Friday.

The 2nd ranked Lady Yellow Jackets routed Lugoff-Elgin 69-12. Jayla Lovett scored 20 points, Maliyiah Mason had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Ehrial Wagstaff finished with 17 points to lead Irmo (19-3, 7-0) to their 9th straight victory. 

It was career win number 404 for head coach Monica Williams. The former University of South Carolina standout also led the Lady Wildcats to a 7th region title.

Up next is a rivalry matchup against Irmo Tuesday. 

 

River Bluff 57, Chapin 25

Samira Khalil scored 18 points and Japonica Wilson had 16 as the Lady Gators tied the school record for wins in a season.

More important, River Bluff (14-8, 4-2) remained tied with Lexington for 1st place in Region 5-5A. The two teams meet Thursday in their regular-season finale. 

River Bluff travels to White Knoll on Tuesday. 

Mackenzie Lott had 14 points for the Lady Eagles (3-15, 0-7), who close out the season Tuesday at home against Lexington.

 

Brookland-Cayce 43, Midland Valley 26

The Lady Bearcats picked up their 1st region win of the season Friday. 

Up next is a trip to Aiken on Tuesday. 

 

Airport 44, Aiken 24 

Jayla Jamison scored 15 points and Amea Zeigler added 13 to lead the Lady Eagles.

Airport (16-7, 6-2) can clinch 2nd place in Region 5-4A and a 1st round Class 4A playoff home game with a victory at home Tuesday versus South Aiken.

 

Strom Thurmond 43, Gilbert 33

The Lady Rebels clinched the Region 5-3A title with the win over the Lady Indians.

Gilbert (10-7, 4-2) can clinch 2nd place and a 1st round home game with a home win Tuesday against Edisto.  

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Irmo 63, Lugoff-Elgin 49

Yellow Jackets’ head coach Tim Whipple reached a “lucky” milestone Friday.

The 2nd winningest boys’ basketball coach in S.C. High School League reached his 777th career victory. C.J. Washington had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Dylan Williams tallied 12 points and Cameron Readus finished with 10 in the victory.

Irmo (20-3, 7-0) travels to archrival Dutch Fork Tuesday.

 

Chapin 49, River Bluff 44

Jack Wolfe had 12 and Jordan Thomas added 9 as the Eagles led from start to finish to defeat the Gators in The Swamp.

Myles Jenkins returned to the River Bluff lineup and had a game-high 13 points. Chase Powell had 9 and Tae’Jon Myers finished with 8 for the Gators (16-7, 3-3). 

Chapin (12-12, 2-5) closes out the regular season Tuesday at home against Lexington. River Bluff travels to White Knoll.

 

Brookland-Cayce 50, Midland Valley 48

An historic night for head coach Robert Wells saw the Bearcats keep alive their hopes for the final playoff berth in Region 5-4A.

Wells earned his 100th career victory for Brookland-Cayce (12-12, 2-6), who are now tied with Airport and Midland Valley for 4th place. 

The Bearcats face Aiken Tuesday. 

 

Aiken 69, Airport 45

Jeremiah Harris scored 16 points and Xavier Ford-Belton finished with 14 for the Eagles.

Airport (11-13, 2-6) plays host to South Aiken Tuesday. 

 

Strom Thurmond 57, Gilbert 49

The Indians (3-15, 3-3) play host to 1st place Edisto Tuesday. 

 

Pelion 50, Swansea 48

The Panthers picked up their 1st region win of the season and kept alive their post-season hopes. 

Pelion (6-18, 1-5) travels to Strom Thurmond Tuesday, while Swansea (4-18, 2-5) closes out the regular season at home against Edisto Thursday.
