LAKE MURRAY TIPOFF CLASSIC - Lexington defeats White Knoll to claim tournament title

Posted

The past few seasons has seen Lexington boys’ basketball coach Bailey Harris on the losing end of his matchups against former players.

Friday’s latest challenger in the Lake Murray Tipoff Classic was his former co-captain and White Knoll head coach Devin Liferidge.

Both teams entered the tournament final with a 3-0 record. In the end, the Wildcats came out with the 52-47 victory over the Timberwolves in a matchup which featured 50 personal fouls and 58  free throws.

“Little bit of an odd game with so much foul trouble on both sides,” Harris said. “I was very pleased with how hard we played. White Knoll is a very improved team from last year and Devin is doing a great job with them. I’m anticipating 2 more very hard fought games with them in region.”

The Timberwolves took a 17-12 lead into the second quarter. After a steal and layup by Tauris Watson, who had a team-high 20 points, White Knoll did not score another field goal until the third quarter.

Lexington outscored White Knoll 14-3 in the second quarter, scoring 13 unanswered points to take a 26-20 halftime left. Mason Carver led the Wildcats with a game-high 25 points and Jonathan Corley added 9.

As the fouls increased, the contest turned into a low-scoring, free-throw shooting contest. White Knoll got within a point, but Carver scored five straight points and Ryan Green had four free throws and a steal to preserve the lead.
