Lady Wildcats get rare sweep

The best start in 13 years by a Lexington boys’ basketball team continued Tuesday in the “Temple of Doom”.

Hot 3-point shooting and a game-high 30 points from Mason Carver sparked the Wildcats to a 66-53 win over Irmo High School.

Lexington (11-0) came out firing from behind the arc, hitting 9-11 in the first half and finishing with 12. Jonathan Corley led the way with 4, 3-pointers in scoring all 13 of his points in the first half.

“He’s been playing really well lately on both end of the floor,” Lexington head coach Bailey Harris said. “I think when people cheat to some of our other guys, it leaves him open and he stepped up and knocked down some really big shots early.”

Lexington led as many as 22 points before Irmo rallied briefly to get within 15 points. A breakaway slam dunk between 2 Yellow Jacket defenders by Brandon Foulks, who finished with 10, helped regain the momentum for Lexington and carry it the rest of the way.

Lexington moved to within one victory of the school mark set by the 2005-06 team when it started 12-0. It can match and/or break the record during the Sandestin Beach Classic in Freeport, Fla. which runs Dec. 27-29.

“That team did not make it really far in the playoffs and I reminded our group that (the 2011-12 team) got swept by Irmo and made it to the state championship,” Harris said. “So, we’re keeping the mentality of 0-0.”

C.J. Washington led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points and Trevez Caldwell added 13.
