Lexington, Chapin/Newberry win Round 2 openers

After 2 straight rain postponements, the 2nd round of the SC American Legion playoffs resumed play Wednesday. 
Both host teams took a 1-0 lead in their respective Best-of-3 series. Lexington Post 7 defeated West Columbia Post 79 9-5 and Chapin/Newberry rolled past Camden Post 17 12-2 in 6 innings at Newberry College. 
Games 2 are set for 7 pm Thursday at Brookland-Cayce High School and Legion Field in Camden, respectively. If necessary, the Game 3s will take place at the site of the Game 1s on Friday. 
The series winners will advance to the 8-team, double-elimination state tournament starting Monday. The final 3 days starting July 30 will take place at Segra Park. 
Lexington 9, West Columbia 5
North Greenville signee Landon McMahan went 2-4 with 4 RBI as Lexington returned from a 2-week hiatus to move within a game of a state title berth. 
Blake Playok of Airport put West Columbia up 1-0 with an RBI single off starter Ethan Lebron. Lexington answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI doubles by Noah Davis and McMahan off Dylan Johnson of White Knoll to take a 2-1 lead.
John Paul Forrester of Airport tied the game with an RBI single in the top 2nd and did it again in the 4th to put West Columbia up 3-2. 
Lexington responded with 7 unanswered runs in the 5th and 6th innings. Ethan Plyler of River Bluff tied the game with an RBI single and put Lexington up 4-3 as he scored on a dropped 3rd strike on Northside Christian's Charlie Compton. 
McMahan added an RBI fielder's choice and Bennett Robinson of River Bluff singled home Compton to make it 6-3. 
McMahan contined his effective hitting with an RBI single in the bottom 6th and scored on Ryan Toll of Lexington's RBI single to make it 9-3.
West Columbia rallied in the top 7th. Sam Lafrage of Airport belted a leadoff solo home run over the leftfield fence. Johnson drew a walk, advanced 2 bases on wild pitches by reliever Alex McGinty of Gilbert and scored on Airport's Cam Beckham's 1-out single. 
McGinty recorded the final 2 outs on groundouts. 
Chapin/Newberry 12, Camden 2 (6 innings)
University of South Carolina commit Matthew Becker of Chapin struck out 8 and fellow Eagle JP Hornick had 3 RBI as Chapin/Newberry improved to 3-0 this season against Camden.
Camden (11-4) took a 2-0 lead in the top 1st. Ty Dooley of Blythewood scored off an outfield error and Brandon Gibbs had an RBI single.
Chapin/Newberry (10-5) answered back with 12 unanswered runs the rest of the way. It tied the game in the bottom 1st After a leadoff double by Ryland Rychener, University of South Carolina commit Evan Stone drove him home with an RBI triple and scored on Hornick's single.
Jay Metts of Dutch Fork put Post 193/24 ahead for good with an RBI single. After Stone reached 1st on an infield error, JP Hornick hit a 2-run single to make it 5-2. 
RBI singles by Lawson Brand, who later scored off an infield error, and Stone put Chapin/Newberry up 8-2 in the bottom 3rd. 
Post 193/24 loaded the bases with 2 outs following 3 straight walks, the last by Brand driving in a run. Cooper French of Dutch followed with an RBI single, Blair Rogers was hit by a pitch to force home a run and Rychener closed out the game on the mercy rule with an RBI walk.
