LEXINGTON COUNTY BLOWFISH - Gamecock Allen's walkoff hit lifts Blowfish to extra-innings win over Bananas

Lexington County gets 1st win in Southern Summerball Series

Posted

On the "Fourth of July", the Lexington County Blowfish provided its own brand of on-field "fireworks"
University of South Carolina outfielder Brady Allen's 2-run walkoff single lifted the Blowfish to a 6-5 victory in 10 innings over the Savannah Bananas.
Allen's single came in Lexington County's 1st at bat under the Coastal Plain League extra inning rules. Each time starts an at-bat with the last 2 batters in the previous inning on 1st and 2nd base.
"This is our new family," said Allen, who finished with 3 RBI. "Having that shortened season, we didn't get a chance to get that family atmosphere that we had at Carolina. But coming together, working out for about 3 weeks before the season with these guys, we're family. We're here to win and we're going to do it together."
With the Blowfish down 5-4 after Savannah's at bat in the top 10th, Brennan Reback and Matt McDermott both stole 2nd and 3rd, respetively. Allen then proceeded to hit a liner into leftfield to score both baserunners and set off a team celebration at 2nd base.
The win was just the 6th in 24 meetings at Lexington County Baseball Stadium by the Blowfish over Savannah. Coming off a 16-4 loss to Macon a night earlier, Lexington County found itself quickly down 1-0 in the top of the 1st on the 1st of 2 home runs by Drew Yniesta.
An RBI fielder's choice by Allen tied the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the 2nd, Tatum Lewis belted a 2-run homer to put the Blowfish ahead 3-1.
After Savannah scored a run off a throwing error by starter Mack Anglin in the top 3rd, Matt McDermott got the run back in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run.
It was the Blowfish's 10th home run of the season.
The game remained tied as William Westbrock threw 3 scoreless innings of relief and had 6 of his team's 17 strikeouts. Savannah centerfielder Garrett Bradley fanned 4 times for the "Golden Sombrero".
Westbrock as relieved by Gamecock freshman Will Sanders who gave up a game-tying 2-run homer to Yniesta in the top 7th.
Sanders struck out 5 of the next 6 batters faced to keep the game tied at 4-4. Will Abbott relieved him in the 9th to pick up the victory.
"Westbrock's been a positive guy for us every single day," Lexington County head coach Matt Padgett said. "I love seeing that guy every day. He competes, he works. He's got a pretty good arm from the left side, too. He got himself out of a couple of jams..really pitched well.
"Sanders, a rising freshman at USC, an 18-year-old kid. He really showed out a lot out there today. 3 pitches pretty much whenever he wanted to and had 2 shutdown innings. The young guys did it."
Lexington County (3-1, 1-1) will play 3 of its next 4 games in the state of Georgia. It starts Tuesday with a rematch against the Bananas.
