A 6-run inning helped Forest City spoil the Lexington County Blowfish’s season-opener at home Thursday.

The Owls held off the Blowfish 10-9 to avenge last year’s 8-7 loss in the season-opener at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.

Lexington County took a 2-0 lead in the 1st. University of South Carolina designated hitter Jordan Holladay drove in 2 runs with a ball misplayed at shortstop for an error.

After Forest City’s Gehrig Christopher drove in a run in the top 2nd, the Owls broke the game open in the 4th inning with 4 straight hits off starter Brett Fulk. Matthew Lundsen had a 2-run single, Kendell McGowen had an RBI single and Garrett Blaylock and Kirby Lambert followed with back-to-back homers over the rightfield wall.

Blaylock’s homer was a 2-run shot, while Lambert was a solo home run.

Down 7-2, the Blowfish got within 7-4 on RBI singles by Holladay and Zachary Rasberry. Forest City added insurance with an RBI fielder’s choice in the 8th and 2 runs in the 9th and finished with 15 hits.

Those runs proved valuable as Lexington County loaded the bases in the bottom 9th. Swansea graduate Josiah Slightler of the University of South Carolina drew a bases loaded walk to drive in a run and a 2-run double by Zacchaeus Rasberry cut the deficit to 10-7.

Slightler scored on a wild pitch and Tylor Corbitt of Airport High School had a RBI groundout to close the Blowfish within a run. With 2 outs, Josh Gregory belted a 2-run double, the 13th hit for Lexington County, but was thrown out advancing to 3rd base to end the game.

Jimmy Marcelli had a team-high 3 hits for the Blowfish, who committed 3 errors.

Lexington County heads on the road to face defending Coastal Plain League South Division champion Savannah Bananas on Friday. The Blowfish then return home to face Wilmington.
