Lexington County drops doubleheader to Florence

Posted

The struggles at Lexington County Baseball Stadium continued Monday for the host team.
Getting swept in an impromptu doubleheader Monday by the Florence RedWolves extended the Lexington County Blowfish's home losing streak to 6. The 5th straight overall loss also dropped them to 5-16 this season in Lexington.
More important, the Blowfish (14-27, 7-9) fell into last place in the South Division's second-half  standings by 3 games with 10 remaining.
Lexington County will face non-South Division foes the next 2 games. It travels to Asheboro Tuesday and returns home to face Fayetteville Wednesday.

(GAME 1)
Florence 3, Lexington Couny 2

Before getting relieved by Jacob Rye in the top 6th, Blowfish starter Shane Connolly kept the RedWolves' bats at bay while holding a 2-1 lead.
The lefthander allowed just 1 run and 4 hits in 5 2/3 innings and received run support in the form of an RBI single by Joey Tepper and RBI double by Michael Green of Clemson.
A 2-out triple by Brandon McIlwain, who scored Florence's 1st run in the 1st on a fielder's choice, marked a turning point in his fortunes. A single by J.T. Weber scored McIlwain to tie the game.
Zachary Durfee then hit a flyball on which both second baseman Trace Whetsell and centerfielder Bailey Gerstner both converged upon. They ended up colliding with each other, knocking the ball out of Whetsell's glove and allowing Weber to score the go-ahead run.
Florence used a double play to end a Blowfish scoring threat in the bottom 6th and winning pitcher Brett Manis retired the side in order to end the game.

(GAME 2)
Florence 9, Lexington County 0

The Blowfish committed 3 errors and found themselves in a 4-0 hole after the 1st inning without allowing a single hit.
Starter Turner Scruggs  walked 4 batters, hit 1 and threw 3 wild pitches in giving up 3 runs while retiring just one batter. Myles White relieved Scruggs and allowed another run, credited to Scruggs, on a wild pitch.
Florence (20-23, 9-7) added 4 more runs in the top 2nd, 2 on a single by McIlwain, who scored on a fielder's choice in the 4th. Meanwhile, three Florence pitches combined for 9 strikeouts and allowed just 5 hits in handing the Blowfish their 6th shutout loss of the season.
A bright spot for Lexington County came in relief from Whetsell. Called into duty to pitch, the Gilbert High School graduate retired all 3 batters he faced in the Top 7th.
