Lexington County schools advance to 3rd round of wrestling tournament

Posted

For the third straight year, the River Bluff wrestling team is headed to the 3rd round of the S.C. High School League tournament.
The Gators defeated first and second round opponents St. James (66-6) and Stratford (39-31), respectively, in The Swamp Saturday.
River Bluff trailed 25-12 through 4 matches. It proceeded to win 6 of the final 7 matches, 2 by forfeit, 3 by decision and a pinfall.
"We had a real tight 2nd round match (last year) with Summerville," River Bluff head coach Evan Moxie said. "It just seems in (Class) 5A, it's so deep every year. Once you get through that 1st round, you're going to have a good team."
River Bluff will stay at home Monday to face Region 5-5A rival White Knoll, who pulled off two road wins against higher seeds in Myrtle Beach.
The Timberwolves opened by upsetting top seed Socastee 35-34 in the first round. They then defeated Ashley Ridge 34-31 to set up a rematch with the Gators in Lexington.
White Knoll's victory also enabled River Bluff to gain homefield advantage through the Lower State final.
The Gators have reached the Lower State final the past 2 years and won the state title in 2017. The team which defeated them in last year's Lower State final in controversial fashion, Fort Dorchester, were defeated by Stratford 45-22.
The Patriots were originally ordered by the SCHSL to forfeit its Lower State final win to River Bluff, but won the appeal. They were eventually defeated by Rock Hill in the state final.
In Class 4A, Region 5-4A champion Airport advanced to the third round. Following an opening round bye, the Eagles defeated Hartsville 42-24 and will travel to top seed Beaufort Monday.
In Class 3A, Gilbert also won its first two playoff matches. After earning an opening round bye via forfeit, the Indians defeated Battery Creek 53-18 and will invite Aynor to Gilbert U.S.A. for a 3rd round matchup.
