Lexington, Dutch Fork among XC teams competing for state title Saturday

Posted

The Lexington High School boys’ cross-country team will head into Saturday’s Class 5A cross-country final at Sandhill Research Center brimming with confidence.
It was at the same venue this past Saturday where the Wildcats claimed the Lower State title. They beat out Fort Mill, Northwestern, Blythewood and Dutch Fork in the Top Five, followed by Irmo (8th) and Chapin (10th).
“This group has been very focused all the way back to summer training,” Harris said. “They are hungry and very dedicated and disciplined. I think we have put ourselves in position to have a chance next week. Dorman has to be considered the favorite, we have to run our absolute best.”
For Lexington to win the state championship, Harris said it will need strong showings from its top six players. William Johnson placed second behind Chapin’s Jaden Kingsley with Zander Jeffcoat in fourth and Heath McDonald was 10th.
“Jayden is a great runner who has had a great season, but Dolan Owens from James Island is the guy to beat and I don’t see him getting beat.”
In the girls’ Class 5A division, Dutch Fork finished in second place behind Fort Mill and was joined by River Bluff (4th), Lexington (5th), Irmo (6th) and Chapin (7th) as state qualifiers.
Five of the top 10 finishers were from Chronicle Country schools - Madelyn Gomez of River Bluff (2nd), Abigail White of Chapin (3rd), Abigail Gopp (7th) and Brianna Hartley (8th), both of Dutch Fork, and Ava Fowler (10th) of Lexington.
Both Gilbert and Pelion qualified teams for the state team. The Indians placed sixth (boys) and eighth (girls), while the Panthers were seventh (boys) and fifth (girls) with Riley Edwards placing seventh and Karl Burgdorf finishing 10th in the boys.
The non-region schedule for the Gray Collegiate Academy volleyball team was made difficult by design.
