Lexington hands 1st loss to White Knoll, QB Aveon Smith injured

Lexington put a stop to White Knoll’s undefeated winning streak Friday night.

The Wildcats played host to the Timberwolves and kept them from a school-record 6-0 start, winning 45-27.

The bigger blow for White Knoll, perhaps, was an injury to quarterback Aveon Smith in the 3rd quarter that caused him to miss the remainder of the game. Smith’s status is unknown at this time as the team would not comment after the game on his condition.

For the first 2 1/2 quarters, it was a pitched battle with the Wildcats and Timberwolves trading scores and stops. Lexington struck first in the opening minutes with a touchdown pass from Elijah Ogden to Jayden Geiger for an early lead.

Smith provided a quick answer from the Timberwolves with a 41-yard scoring run into the end zone to tie the game at 7-7.

The second quarter saw each team’s defense cracking down and denying points via turnovers, Smith again broke a long run and then completed a 72 yard pass play to DeAree Rogers for White Knoll’s 2nd touchdown to make it a 14-7 game.

Lexington worked the clock at the end of the half and came away with a last second field goal by Brady Bolin to decrease the gap to 14-10.

In the third, the Wildcats stepped up the pressure on Smith. They forced a turnover on a fumbled handoff and Lexington capitalized with a 2-yard touchdown run by Taylor Mathias to take a 17-14 lead.

On the Timberwolves’ next drive, Smith’s injury happened as he completed a touchdown pass to Darius Derrick-Jones. Ater he was helped off the field, the Timberwolves had the extra point blocked, which put White Knoll back in the lead at 20-17.

The Wildcats’ offense took over the game as the Timberwolves struggled to move the ball with backup quarterback Jaelin Gray. They missed 3 crucial fourth down conversions that would have extended drives.

Lexington took full advantage of the easy field position and scored 28 unanswered points. Ahmad Bynem-Scott rushed for 2 scores, Jayden Geiger caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Ogden and Carlton Finney scored on a 1-yard run.

Despite his injury, Smith still led the Timberwolves’ offense with 94 rushing yards and going 10-15 for 175 yards and two touchdowns.

For the Wildcats, Mathias had 165 rushing yards and a touchdown and Ogden was 11-18 for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Lexington (6-1, 1-0) has a bye next week, while White Knoll (6-1, 1-0) plays host to Chapin.
